Yes, you certainly can. Just so long as the fabric specifications fit the requirements of the job.
We encourage customers to visit our Preston showroom and choose from a wide range of fabrics, vinyls, and leathers from Australian and International suppliers. One of our team will be there to guide you through the process and choose a covering that is best suited to the form and function of your piece.
Depending on our workload, and your scope of works, we usually allow 4-6 weeks lead time from the time your job enters our workshop.
Depending on your circumstances, we may be able to speed up the process to reach a specified commercial deadline.
For sofas and other larger pieces, we prefer to wait until your fabric order arrives in store, before we receive your furniture. Overseas fabric suppliers can sometimes take several weeks to freight.
Yes, our showroom leads into our workshop out the back. We regularly invite clients into the workshop (or to “where the magic happens”) to see their job in progress or to discuss repairs.
When it comes to stripping back antiques and treasured family heirlooms, we love to share our discoveries with clients. There’s no telling what secrets lie beneath the surface of some pieces- we could uncover a priceless Maker’s mark, or Grandad’s carved initials, perhaps one of Mum’s long lost earrings or maybe just the remnants of an old fabric you recognise from your childhood.
Either way, we get great satisfaction from involving our clients in the process.
We can arrange furniture pickup and delivery, free of charge, to surrounding Preston suburbs. Depending on location and accessibility, transport charges may apply.
Alternatively, items can be dropped off to us when we are ready to commence the job.
If you are moving to a new house and want to refresh your furniture (without double handling), we can coordinate furniture pickup and delivery times in accordance with your move.
Yes, sometimes it is necessary to provide an on-site consult to determine the job requirements. That said, we can usually gather enough information from photos supplied and from discussions with clients.
We typically carry out site visits to measure up and install fixed items such as banquette seating, window seats, acoustic wall panelling etc.
We do prefer to carry out repairs at our Preston workshop. For minor repairs, such as a small rip or hole in a sofa, we may be able to carry out an on-site repair.
Our showroom is open to the public 8am-5pm Monday- Friday, and 9am-12pm on Saturdays.
If you a bringing in a chair, or another piece of furniture for assessment, it’s always a good idea to call ahead to let us know you’re coming. That way we can ensure the necessary staff aren’t out doing a delivery.
Our phone number is (03) 9484 8586
When you buy imported, mass-produced furniture from a mainstream retail store, you can expect that it was made from low quality materials that aren’t designed to last, nor be easily repaired. The manual labour time required to fully reupholster this furniture is no match for a machine that pumps out mass sofa coverings, following a pre-programmed pattern.
It’s very common for customers to approach us with near-new sofas that have collapsed cushions, slack suspension, or worn-out fabric. Or with “leather” dining chairs that have collapsed seats and peeling covers (please know that if your leather is peeling, it’s not leather- even if the seller said it was). We can certainly repair and reupholster these items, but be aware that depending on the labour involved, the cost may come close to what you paid for them.
There is a famous quote that reads - “ The bitterness of poor quality is remembered long after the sweetness of low price is forgotten”. With that in mind, over 85% of furniture that we put on the curb in Australia isn't recycled and is instead sent to landfill.
But there is hope! In recent years, we have noticed this bitter realisation (and frustration) start to sink in within our Melbourne locale. There seems to be a greater quest for quality, well-crafted and customisable furniture pieces. We are so proud to be part of a city that constantly strives to be more sustainable and less of a throw-away society. As with most cases, it is simply more economical in the long-term, and more sustainable to just buy quality from the outset.
There are plenty of options out there to suit all budgets. Why not source a quality piece from a local furniture maker? Or go thrift shopping for a second-hand quality piece, in need of restoration? Facebook marketplace, Gumtree and eBay are great places to start. You can even find quality furniture dumped on the side of the road sometimes.
At Navascues Upholstery, we can custom build quality residential or commercial furniture to your liking, and we are also proud suppliers of Australian-made, Molmic furniture. Molmic lounge suites are quality made, customisable and come with a 10-year warranty.
Drop by our showroom and browse the catalogue, select a fabric from our vast collection and get a price. You can also view the Molmic range here
We can do both! We have premium grade outdoor foam options, dependant on whether your cushions are to be undercover or completely exposed the elements.
We also have a range UV- resistant outdoor fabrics to choose from.
There’s lot of ways we can give furniture a more contemporary look.
For example, when it comes to re-upholstering an old armchair, we can;
- Change the finishing trim (vintage gimp trim, double piping, studding)
- Leave off the skirt and expose the timber legs (if it has a skirt)
- Change the legs
- Put new brass castors on the legs
… and most importantly, update the fabric to something more contemporary and suited to your home. We encourage customers to visit our showroom and discuss options for your unique piece.
Yes, we can carry out all the repairs necessary to make your dining chairs structurally sound again. If you have multiple chairs to repair, we do ask that you bring them to the workshop for individual assessment.
Depending on the extent of the damage, we may need to knock the chair frame apart completely, clean out all the old glue, replace broken dowels, reinforce the frame with custom fit corner blocks, re-glue, clamp and set all joints.
We see plenty of broken furniture that has had botched, or band-aid repairs previously carried out. Let us repair them properly so they last.
Firstly, your son needs a clip around the ear… Just kidding! Yes, we can repair all sorts of breaks.
Please visit us with the chair and all the broken pieces.
We can organise to have the fabric Fire retarded to Australian Standards. That said, we do stock many commercial fabrics that have the Fire retarded treatment built into the fabric.
When it comes to re-upholstering, a good place to start is to first select a quality fabric. We stock a vast range durable, easy-to-clean, stain repellent fabrics.
We can also organise to have your fabric scotch-guarded, which is a treatment that adds a layer of protection against dirt, water damage, mould, bacteria, and oil and water-based stains.
Warwick fabrics offers an in-house scotch guarding treatment for their full range range of fabrics, both natural and synthetic, which provides resistance and repellency to water, oil and soil base stains. For more information, click here
We also sell Warwick’s fabric spot cleaner spray which was developed to combat against stains and spills on fabric upholstery. Simply spray the cleaner onto a cloth and press onto the stained area to remove. Once the stain has gone, dampen a cloth and use water to blot gently. We recommend testing the spot cleaner on a small area first and seeking professional cleaning advice for more serious damage. For more information, click here
To extend the life of your upholstered items, we also suggest keeping furniture out of direct sunlight (throw rugs, window treatments and window tinting can help), and not using furniture as a trampoline.
Depending on where the damage is located, we may be able to hand-sew the tear closed, fit a fabric patch over the damage or reupholster some (or all) of the sofa.
Unfortunately, even the toughest fabrics can struggle to withstand sharp claws and teeth. However, we do stock a wide range of tough, durable fabrics with a tight weave to help combat “the issue”.
Particularly in a commercial setting, vinyl gets greasy from handling. The grease build-up leads to the vinyl breaking down and cracking. This problem is easily solved by regularly wiping down vinyl surfaces with a damp cloth.
Vinyl is a great product to use in residential and commercial spaces as it is very durable (when looked after) and can be sanitised. The quality of vinyl has improved significantly since the 50s, and it can also be a cheaper (and perfectly adequate) alternative to leather.
At Navascues Upholstery, we can cater our methods to suit individual requirements. In this instance, we can use natural products such as natural fibre woven vegetable died fabrics, latex rubber cushioning, cotton wadding and flock stuffing. We can completely avoid using foam and synthetic products.
We can make a custom modify furniture to suit every individual. For example, we can fit a suitable lumber cushion, potentially raise the seat, or provide firmer cushion inserts if necessary. We’re not happy until you’re happy!
We offer a range of cushion insert options from premium high-density foam, to feather and down luxury seating, feather fibre mixture or various other combinations.
If your sofa back cushions are starting to sag, we may be able to plump them up with extra filling or completely replace them with a medium to soft density foam, wrapped in Dacron.
We suggest you bring your cushions with you when you visit, so we can discuss options.
It may be that the seat cushion inserts have collapsed and/or the suspension has weakened over time. We can reinforce and/or replace the base webbing, or a fully sprung seat, or just replace broken springs where required.
